About this journey

The Rift Valley on foot, by bicycle and by water

Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate sit a short distance apart in the floor of the Great Rift Valley, yet they feel like two different worlds. One is a broad freshwater lake edged with papyrus and acacia, busy with birds and hippos. The other is a dry, rocky landscape of cliffs, gorges and volcanic towers that you can explore under your own power. This three-day, two-night escape pairs them for travellers who would rather be outdoors than in a vehicle, with a comfortable base beside the lake and a full day of activity in the park.

Lake Naivasha

The lake is the quieter half of the trip. Its shoreline draws a wide range of waterbirds, and hippos are often heard and sometimes seen near the water's edge, though sightings are never guaranteed. An optional boat trip on the water, where arranged and priced separately, offers a closer view of the birdlife and the papyrus fringe. Weather and the lake's own conditions decide whether a trip runs, so it is arranged as an option rather than promised. Read more on the Lake Naivasha destination page.

Hell's Gate National Park

Hell's Gate takes its name from a narrow break in towering cliffs. It is one of the few Kenyan parks where, subject to park rules, visitors can explore without a vehicle, on foot or by bicycle, among zebra, buffalo, antelope and baboons, with raptors circling the rock faces. A guided walk through the gorge may be offered where it is permitted and conditions are safe. Access can change after heavy rain, so the day is planned around current conditions and the advice of rangers and guides. Our Hell's Gate destination page has more on the park.

Physical demands and safety

This is an active trip with moderate physical demands. Cycling and walking mean time in the sun and heat on uneven ground, so a reasonable level of fitness and comfort on a bicycle are needed for those activities. Distances and terrain depend on the route chosen on the day. Activities follow current park rules, safety guidance and operator requirements, and some may be closed or changed because of weather, wildlife or maintenance. We do not describe any activity as suitable for all ages or abilities; age, health and mobility restrictions are confirmed with the operator before booking. If anyone in your group has a medical condition, tell us when you enquire.

What shapes the final price

The starting price is illustrative and is not a confirmed offer. The final price depends on the group size, the season, the lodge, hotel or camp chosen, the transport, and which activities, guide services and park fees are included. Equipment hire, optional boat activities and any fees not listed as included are explained in the quotation and are not part of the starting price. Nothing is booked until you have reviewed and confirmed the written quotation. Start with our trip planning form or contact our team, and see our guide to what to pack for sensible clothing and footwear.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for the 3-Day Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate Adventure?

The trip has moderate physical demands. Cycling and walking involve sustained effort on uneven ground in sun and heat, and cycling requires confidence on a bicycle. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable with several hours of gentle activity. Tell us about any health or mobility concerns when you enquire so we can confirm what is suitable.

Can children join the Hell's Gate activities on this adventure?

Children may be able to join some activities, but it depends on their age, ability and the rules in force at the time, and we do not describe any activity as suitable for every age. The operator and park rules set minimum ages and conditions. Share the ages of your children when you enquire and we will confirm what is allowed before quoting.

Is cycling included on the 3-Day Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate Adventure?

Only where the quotation lists it. Bicycle hire is excluded unless it is stated as included, and cycling is allowed only where park rules permit and conditions are suitable on the day. Your written quotation explains which equipment, guide services and park charges are covered and which are not.

What should I bring for the Hell's Gate day?

Bring sturdy closed shoes, a hat, sun protection, a refillable water bottle, light layers and a small day pack. Weather can change, so a light rain layer is sensible. Follow the guidance of rangers and guides, and carry any medication you need. Our packing guide covers clothing and footwear in more detail.

Can I see wildlife at Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate?

Both places support wildlife. The lake is known for waterbirds and hippos, while Hell's Gate has zebra, buffalo, antelope, baboons and birds of prey. Sightings are never guaranteed and depend on timing, season and luck. Keep a respectful distance, follow ranger instructions and enjoy what the day offers.
